Citizenship of Ukraine can be acquired for a variety of reasons, one of which is the acknowledgement of paternity / maternity, or ascertainment of the fact of paternity / maternity.

Child's origin from the father is determined by the request of woman and man who are not married to each other. Such an application may be submitted both before and after the birth of a child in the body of state registration of civil status acts. In absence of such declaration child's paternity can be acknowledged by the court. Evidential base for acknowledgement of paternity is any information which certifies the origin of a child from a certain person, compiled in accordance with the Civil Procedure Code of Ukraine. The statement claim for acknowledgement of paternity may be applied by a mother, guardian of a child, custodian of a child, as well as by a child who has reached the age of maturity. The statement claim for acknowledgement of paternity may also be applied by a person who considers themselves as a father of a child. The statement claim for acknowledgement of paternity is accepted by the court, if the record about the father of the child in the book of birth registration is made ​​by the name and nationality of the mother, and the name and child's father's surname is written by the mother. In case of death of the mother, as well as the failure to establish a place of residence of mother and father of the child, application is submitted by relatives, other persons or the authorized representative of the health institution where the child was born.

In case of death of a man who is not married to the child's mother, the fact of his paternity may be ascertained by the court. Application for ascertainment of the fact of paternity is accepted by the court, if the record about the father of the child in the book of birth registration is made ​​by the name and nationality of the mother, and child's father's name and surname is written by the mother.

Anyone who considers herself as child's mother, could apply to the court for acknowledgement of maternity, if  child's birth parents were unknown and the state registration of birth was made by the decision of the guardianship authority, which determined surname, first name, child's father's name and information about parents .

In case of death of a woman who considered herself the mother of a child, the fact of her motherhood can be ascertained by the court. The application of ascertainment of the fact of maternity is accepted by the court, if child's birth parents were unknown and the state registration of birth was made by the decision of the guardianship authority. The application of ascertainment of the fact of maternity may be filed by father, guardian, custodian of a child, as well as by a child who has reached the age of maturity.

In case of acknowledgement of paternity of a child, whose father is a citizen of Ukraine, whose mother is a foreigner / stateless person, the child, regardless of their place of birth and residence may acquire the citizenship of Ukraine. In case of acknowledgement of maternity of a child, whose mother is acknowledged as a citizen of Ukraine, and whose father is a foreigner or a stateless person, the child, regardless of their place of birth and residence may acquire the citizenship of Ukraine. If the fact of paternity of the child, whose mother is a foreigner / stateless person, if the child's father was a citizen of Ukraine, the child, regardless of their place of birth and place of residence may acquire Ukrainian citizenship.

In ascertainment of the fact of child's maternity, whose father is a foreigner or a stateless person, if the child's mother was a citizen of Ukraine, regardless of where the child was born and place of residence, child may acquire the citizenship of Ukraine.

If the acknowledgment of paternity or maternity, or ascertainment of the fact of paternity or maternity occurred after the child reaches the age of maturity, a person who is a stateless person may acquire the citizenship of Ukraine regardless of their place of birth and place of permanent residence.

If the acknowledgment of paternity or maternity, or ascertainment of the fact of paternity or maternity occurred after the child reaches the age of maturity, a person who is a foreigner acquires the citizenship of Ukraine regardless of their place of birth and place of permanent residence if submits an application for adoption of the citizenship of Ukraine and provides an obligation to terminate foreign citizenship.
